star trek (tos) V.S doctor who (classic) V.S star wars (a new hope)

all series have their beginning. are favorite stories, their sequels, prequels and inspirations stretch back for decades, sometimes dozens of years. but which of the big three science fiction series has the best beginning?

 Star Wars A New Hope

PLOT: a young farm boy dreams of leaving his boring existence on a moisture farm, to go out and fight the evil empire. he joins with a crazy hermit, rouge smuggler who shots first, a walking carpet and a snarky princess in their quest to destroy a planet destroying space station and the dark lord vader.

Star Trek The Classic Series

PLOT: in the twenty third century, humans have explored the stars and everything is perfect. well, except for the Klingons. and romulans. and gorn. and countless pretend gods. join...cap...tain kirk played...by...william shatner, emotional emotionless first mate spock, doctor McCoy, and a bunch of other people who never really get to do much.

Doctor Who Classic

PLOT: his name is the doctor. he's a mad man with a blue box, who can change his face and travel through time. with his companions in tow, the mysterious time lord known as the doctor will face the end of the universe and villains beyond imagination. unfortunately thats the new series. the classic is basically the same, minus action and plus several hours run time. STILL has better special effects than star trek tos.

Which One Is Best?

CHARACTERS: the dynamic between spock, MCcoy and kirk is justly famous. however, it doesn't really change during the entire time, and their costars are woefully underdeveloped. 

throughout the 27 years of classic who, numerous characters get a truck load of development, especially the doctor, who goes through seven different personalities. 

for one 2 hour movie, the "new hope" characters STILL change more than the TOS crew, and are still enjoyable to watch. still, i will give this too classic who, who had dozens of well developed characters.

EFFECTS: a no brainer. a new hope uses effects that still hold up today. the other two use bubble wrap. star wars gets this point.

STORIES: its between star trek's 79, mostly good stories, classic who's several hundred mostly not that great stories, and star wars's ONE extremely good story. in the end, star trek wins with the highest quality to quantity ratio.

THE VERDICT: classic who had many good points and interesting characters, but in the end had just as many poor stories and bad BAD effects. a new hope is a masterpiece of cinema, but it is just one movie. in the end, despite its flaws, star trek: tos is the superior original work, spocks brain and all.
